Schools have been very enthused with the idea of a presentation addressing media literacy, and now we're gearing up to hold a fundraiser so that we can make this all happen! UCLA, get ready for lattes, mochas, cocoas, and more at Bruin Plaza coming winter quarter (date will be announced a bit later). We'll have a few teachers peeking at our lesson plans within the week, and we're super excited for the feedback so we can make PML just as effective as it can be. Keep in touch guys, and as always, stay literate.
Project Media Literacy is a UCLA student group that works with local middle schools to develop media literacy at a younger age. We encourage students to analyze and critique the countless mass media forums they interact with on a daily basis after taking a close look at the motivations behind, and inner workings of, different internet sites, television shows, films, newscasts, and music features. Project Media Literacy fosters independent viewpoints and rich minds, y'hear!

Woah woah woah! It's been too long...
Helloooo strangers!
PML has been rolling deep and knocking out some serious work these past few weeks geared toward finalizing our lesson plans and getting in touch with schools so we can start making the Los Angeles area more media literate one school at a time! The group we've gathered round one of applications is amazing, and we're super lucky to have them on board as team members of Project Media Literacy. So congrats to Sarah, Angel, Yolanda, Ben, Lilea, Daryl, and Patricia!
Think media literacy is a silly skill to have? Consider the things we've noticed the past few weeks while interacting:
-Different news corporations are selectively presenting facts on stories to sway viewers
-During a 3 hour Spongebob marathon spree, all of the toys targeted to girls involved ideals of consumerism/physical appearances
-Boys have immense pressures from the media to gain power status and control sentimental emotions
-Stereotyping is a harmful selling technique alive and well in advertising
Keep in touch viewers...if you have suggestions, comments, or questions, email projectmedialiteracy@gmail.com for more information and a real person reply! No computers, swear it!

Print this out and write on it!
...applications are due Wednesday October 14th to the Communications Office at 2303 Rolfe Hall by 4pm! There you will find a marked box, which will be put out Monday, so don't try to turn it in earlier because the assistant will just look at you all funny like. Good luck guys!

One day to go!
Applications are up in a day! If you need something to tide you over until tomorrow, check out these vintage advertisements....mildly shocking portrayal of ze women (the driving segment is downright hilarious), but again, a really obvious testimony to the biases of the media...have things changed much, eh?

DROOL
I use this too much like a blog. I promise to restrain myself in future instances. I like my media.

Daily Bruin Coverage
Success! We were interviewed today for the Daily Bruin and the feature should run Thursday Oct. 1st (in two days!), so look out for it! Of course, the best part was that the writer, Christine, was super stoked about our goals and program outline...we do love our fans, yes sir.
Don't forget to keep posted on applications...those will appear here Wednesday of Week 2, in 8 days! A general information session will take place Thursday of Week 2, 8pm meeting at the Bruin Bear and then heading to a cozy patch of well-lit grass so as to accommodate people with late-night classes. If the evening slot isn't do-able for you, don't forget to send any questions to projectmedialiteracy@gmail.com.
Cheers and many brownies in your future,
PML

Harsh!
Por Ejemplo: Effects of Advertising on Viewers
Oh boo, people. This is sketch business right here! Cheers to spreading the news via PML so more girls (and boys) like me can happily eat my batch of brownies while watching America's Next Top Model...and NOT feel bad about it, muaha!

One, two, three....BEAR?
This clip is pretty sick, besides the fact that it's a superb example of priming, in which the media tell a person what to think about. This selective attention, of course, could lead to someone missing a pretty big fact or two while they're focused on one issue.

Zero Week
Zero week is up and running and PML is on the treadmill sweatin' it out like a champ. A feature in the Daily Bruin is in the works so be sure to check back for more news! We're already practicing our pouty faces for the camera, don't worry.
AS FOR APPLICATIONS! Those will be posted, pending the DB article, Wednesday of Week 2 (October 7th) and due by 4pm the following Wednesday (October 14th) to the Communications Office at Rolfe 2303. Check back for updates, ladies and gentlemen, as if we gather enough swagger from the article we may push back the date to accommodate more applicants.
Out!
-Michelle, PML Supreme Chancellor of Excellence
